Olivia received a butterfly net for her birthday! It came with a coupon for caterpillars. We have redeemed our coupon, and are just waiting for their arrival. To pr epare for the caterpillars, we read Eric Carle’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and made predictions about what we thought our caterpillars will eat. Olivia had the great idea to make a caterpillar craft today, so we went with it!
Here are the materials that we used:
– Half of an egg carton
– Paint (I let Olivia choose the colors)
– Paint brush
– Googly eyes
– Pipe cleaner
– X-acto knife
– Elmer’s glue
First I asked Olivia to paint the egg carton. We were not scientifically accurate with colors. Olivia choose purple, pink, and blue. After the glue dried a bit, I used an X-acto knife to cut holes in the head of the caterpillar, to make a space for the antennae. I cut a pipe cleaner into small pieces to be used for the antennae. I wrapped it around Olivia’s pointer finger to make it curl, and then placed them into the holes. Olivia then chose a yellow and blue googly eye, which she glued on using Elmer’s glue. Olivia was very proud of her creation. She decided to give it to her daddy, but told him he wasn’t allowed to bring it to work because she wanted to look at it here.
