Fishing For Letters

img_2517Olivia loves exploring the alphabet in different ways. Today she went fishing for the ABCs! Before beginning the activity I made s fishing pole out of a ruler, piece of yarn, and a magnetic metal clip. I tied the yarn around the ruler, and added tape to keep it in place. I also taped the yarn to the clip. To go fishing, I asked Olivia to dump her magnetic letters into a plastic bowl. She had so much using her fishing pole to catch the letters. As she caught them, I asked her to identify them. img_2518Sometimes she even told me a word that started with that letter!
I had done a similar activity in my tutoring days with first graders. For these students, I cut fish out of construction paper and write site words into them. I then added paper clips so that they could catch them with the magnetic fishing pole. You could also use this activity to fish for colors, shapes, names and numbers!  Happy fishing!
