One of my favorite days to celebrate as a teacher was Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We had a ton of fun dressing up like different characters and having the students travel from room to room to read and complete activities from various Dr. Seuss books! I started celebrating with Olivia last year. We hung all of her creations on one of the walls in our dining room. We started working on this year’s activities today. Before starting our craft, I read The Cat and the Hat to her. She loved seeing what time of trouble The Cat and the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 were going to get into next.
For today’s craft, we made Thing 1, from The Cat in the Hat using various shapes. Here are the materials that you need:
- 1 red square (for his body)
- 4 red rectangles (for his arms and legs)
- 2 white circles for his head and the Thing 1 circle on his belly
- A half semicircle (which was a coffee filter cut in half) for his hair.
- Blue marker
Olivia used a marker to color the coffee filter blue. I gave her one piece at a time, asked her to identify the shape and showed her where to glue it. We used the book as a model, and she did all of the gluing herself! She couldn’t wait to bring him upstairs to hang on the wall!
